Urea as the basic component in pyridine-free Karl Fischer reagent.

A solution of urea, sulphur dioxide and sodium salicylate in methanol is proposed as the solvent in the Karl Fischer titration, with a separate iodine solution as titrant. Comparison of the performance of this solvent with that of some commercial reagents shows that it is has distinct advantages for use with amine samples.

Allergic contact dermatitis from aluminium in deodorants.

A 28-year-old woman presented with an axillary eczema that occurred after using deodorants. Patch testing revealed contact allergy to aluminium chloride. With avoidance of aluminium-containing deodorants, the eczema cleared completely. Aluminium and its salts are widely used but contact allergy to them is uncommon. It is occasionally recognised incidentally as a reaction to aluminium Finn Chamb...

Allergic Contact Dermatitis Physiology

Allergic Contact Dermatitis (ACD) involves the penetration of an allergen through the skin surface where it acts as a hapten by binding to epidermal proteins and eliciting, a delayed Type IV hypersensitivity reaction 48 to 120 hours after exposure. This immunologic response involves the activation of Th1 cells with the subsequent release of cytokines resulting in the classic inflammatory reaction.

Allergic contact dermatitis

Allergic contact dermatitis is a T cell mediated, antigen-specific inflammatory reaction of the skin due to repeated epicutaneous exposure to antigens. Immunologically it is divided into 2 phases, induction and elicitation phase. During the first phase which is clinically silent, naïve T cells are activated and differentiate into antigen-specific memory T cells. During the elicitation phase, af...

Allergic contact dermatitis.

Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a common occupational and environmental health issue. In common with other forms of allergy the disease progresses in two stages; an initial phase during which sensitization is acquired, followed later (after subsequent exposure to the same chemical allergen) by elicitation of a cutaneous inflammatory reaction. The development of skin sensitization is associ...
